DBT Star College Scheme

CMS College (Autonomus), Kottayam, the grande dame of higher education in India, was established in 1817 with the initiation of Colonel John Munroe, the Dewan of Travancore, Maharani Gouri Lakshmi Bai and Col. Colin Macaulay, the first Resident of Travancore. The college, erewhile known as The College Cotym, was started for uplifting the socio-economically backward people of central Travancore.

Moulded to the perfection what it is now by several visionaries, at its 200 glorious years of service, C.M.S. College has been evolved to an elegant intuition offering numerous flagship programmes in disciplines such as Arts, Science, Humanities, and vocational studies. We attract the best students across the state; who are mentored by faculties of highest qualifications and experience.

Realizing the potential of the College, the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India, has selected the College for support under the strengthening component of the Star College Scheme in 2016. With the support, six departments, viz. Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Botany, Zoology and Home Science has received financial support for strengthening their undergraduate teaching infrastructures and facilities. The first year programme was implemented by providing hands-on practical trainings for students using specialized equipments, conducting trainings for both teaching and nonteaching staffs, organizing invited faculty lectures and seminars, workshops and exhibitions, visiting academia and industries, and organizing outreach programmes.
