The ability of microalgae to grow rapidly, and adapt to extremes of environment makes them suitable models for understanding metabolic and evolutionary processes. The potential of microalgal photosynthesis for the production of valuable compounds or for energetic use is widely recognized due to their more efficient utilization of sunlight energy as compared with higher plants. My research mainly focuses on assessing the microalgal diversity from different habitat locations and isolation of potent microalgal strains for bio-prospecting.
Bio-prospecting of microalgae from different aquatic and terrestrial environments and extreme habitats, is considered to be of tremendous significance for obtaining promising and novel isolates with potential applications. Now-a-days, there are numerous commercial applications of microalgae such as, microalgae can be used to enhance the nutritional value of food and animal feed owing to their chemical composition; they play a crucial role in aquaculture and they can be incorporated into cosmetics. My research is aimed to assess the diversified nutrients and biochemical constitutes of microalgae, which could devise chemotaxonomic position of microalgae and can also be recommend for various pharmaceutical, biofuels, pigment applications. Apart from these the role of different biotic and abiotic factors on the biochemical composition, growth and productivity of microalgae is also being investigated.
The new potent strains isolated can be further exploited at regional labs which are actively engaged in research on bio-fuel production, pigment extraction, PHA, bio-plastics, biosensors and many other commercially important eco-friendly products.
