CMS College Alumna Wins 2026 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics

CMS College, Kottayam, proudly celebrates the exceptional achievement of its alumna Dr. Suvarna Ramachandran, who is among the recipients of the prestigious Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics.

The award recognises multi-decade, groundbreaking contributions to the measurement of the muon’s anomalous magnetic moment, a fundamental quantity in particle physics that continues to challenge and refine our understanding of the Standard Model. These high-precision experimental efforts have been carried out at leading international research facilities including CERN, Brookhaven National Laboratory, and Fermilab.

Dr. Suvarna Ramachandran completed her B.Sc. in Physics from CMS College, Kottayam (2004–2007), laying the foundation for an outstanding academic and research career. She went on to pursue her M.Sc. in Physics from University of Hyderabad (2009), followed by an M.S. and Ph.D. in Physics (High Energy Physics) from University of Kentucky (2011 and 2018 respectively).
She subsequently worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher at Argonne National Laboratory (2018–2020), during which she contributed to the globally renowned Muon g-2 Experiment at Fermilab.

The Breakthrough Prize is awarded collectively to the living co-authors of the landmark publications reporting the results of these experiments, recognising decades of collaborative scientific effort.
