CMS College Secures Indian Patent for Innovative Elastomeric Composite Material

The patent titled “A Reinforced Elastomeric Composite and a Method of Preparation Thereof”, granted by the Intellectual Property Office of the Government of India, is based on research carried out at the Department of Chemistry, CMS College, Kottayam by Dr. Gigi George and Ms. Vishudha Mundannattu, who was an MSc Applied Chemistry student of the department at the time of the research. The study also involved collaboration with Dr. Sreekumar Vadakkemadam (NIT Jaipur), a metallurgist, who contributed to the advanced characterization of the developed material.

The research focuses on the development of a novel elastomeric composite material prepared by combining natural rubber with a specially designed filler system. One of the major advantages of this composite is its ability to significantly reduce the curing time of rubber, which can substantially improve industrial production efficiency and manufacturing productivity. The reduction in curing time can also lead to lower energy consumption during processing, thereby improving overall cost efficiency in rubber manufacturing.

Another important feature of the developed composite is its enhanced electrical conductivity. The combination of faster processing and improved conductivity makes the material particularly promising for next-generation flexible and functional materials.

The developed material has potential applications in several emerging technology areas, including flexible electronics, wearable devices, smart materials, and advanced sensor technologies. Innovations of this nature can provide renewed momentum to the rubber manufacturing sector in Kerala, which has been facing significant challenges in recent years.

The invention is expected to open new opportunities for research collaborations and industry partnerships, while also contributing to the growing culture of innovation and intellectual property generation in Indian higher education institutions. This achievement further strengthens the research profile of CMS College, Kottayam, and highlights the institution’s commitment to scientific advancement and innovation.
