one-day workshop titled “Advances in Plant Taxonomy: From Field Identification to Molecular Systematics”

The Department of Biotechnology, CMS College Kottayam (Autonomous), successfully organized a one-day workshop titled “Advances in Plant Taxonomy: From Field Identification to Molecular Systematics” on 22 July 2026 at Joseph Fenn Hall.

The workshop featured expert sessions and hands-on training by Dr. Joby Paul (St. Thomas College, Thrissur) and Mr. Ebin PJ (Sacred Heart College, Thevara). The sessions covered floristic diversity assessment, herbarium curation, plant identification, taxonomic keys, numerical taxonomy and molecular phylogeny.

The programme provided participants with valuable practical exposure to both classical and modern approaches in plant taxonomy and witnessed enthusiastic participation from students and faculty members of four outside colleges (Baselius College Kottayam, K E College Mannanam, St Dominic’s College Kanjirappally and Assumption College Changanassery) along with participants from CMS College Kottayam.
